The tool is a graphic EQ: the frequencies are fixed, and you control how much gain (from -12 dB to +12 dB) you add or remove at each one. That means classic vocal-EQ advice maps to the nearest available band rather than an exact number — here's how each band translates to a real voice.

Notice that 6 kHz pulls double duty: it's where a vocal gets its bite and where harsh sibilance lives. You'll usually pick one job for it per vocal.
These matter more than any specific band:
It still sounds muddy after cutting 240 Hz. Try a slightly deeper 240 Hz cut, and make sure the 80 Hz shelf is doing its job — leftover low-end energy reads as mud too. If the whole track is muddy, the fix may not be on the vocal at all.
The vocal sounds thin now. You cut too much, or cut too high. Bring the 80 Hz shelf back toward flat, and if you dipped 240 Hz hard, ease it back — that band carries warmth as well as boxiness.
It's harsh or sibilant. Back off any 6 kHz boost first; if it's still spiky, apply a small 6 kHz cut instead. Also check the 12 kHz air — too much shelf can exaggerate esses and breath noise.
The EQ seems to do nothing. Confirm you're previewing (Play is running) and that you actually moved a slider off 0 dB. Very small moves on a quiet vocal can be genuinely subtle — try a more decisive ±3 dB to hear the band clearly, then dial back.
The vocal still sits behind the music. EQ can carve space, but it can't fix a poorly balanced level. Lift 2.2 kHz for presence, but also check the vocal's volume against the track — sometimes it just needs to be louder, not brighter.

Should I high-pass a vocal? Rolling off the extreme low end is standard practice — it removes rumble, plosives, and mic handling noise that a voice doesn't need. This tool doesn't have a true high-pass filter, but its 80 Hz low shelf does the same job gently: pull it down 3–6 dB and you'll clear the bottom without a harsh brick-wall cut, which is enough for most vocals.
What frequencies make a vocal sound muddy? Muddiness in a voice usually lives in the low-mids, roughly 200–400 Hz. On this 6-band EQ the nearest lever is the 240 Hz band — a 2 to 4 dB cut there cleans up boxy, thick, cardboard-sounding vocals. If the whole mix is muddy rather than just the vocal, the culprit is often several instruments crowding that same region at once.
Can I de-ess with an EQ? Partly. Harsh esses sit around 5–8 kHz, and a small cut on the 6 kHz band will reduce them. The catch is that a graphic-EQ cut is always on, so it also dulls the vocal's clarity even when there's no "s" sound. It works for mild sibilance; for heavy, spitty esses a dedicated de-esser that only acts on the loud sibilant moments is more precise.
Do I EQ vocals before or after compression? Both are common, and it depends on the problem. Many engineers make a corrective cut (rumble, boxiness) before compression so the compressor isn't reacting to junk, then make a tonal boost (presence, air) after, so compression doesn't squash the character they just added. If you're only doing one EQ pass, do it and listen — trust the result over the rulebook.
