
There are two very different things people mean by "fade audio in and out," and knowing which one you need saves a lot of time. If your clip just starts or ends with an ugly click, you don't need a fade at all — you need a clean trim, which takes a couple of minutes in a free audio cutter that keeps your audio on your own device. A fade is a gradual change in amplitude — the loudness of the signal — applied over time. Technically, the editor multiplies each audio sample by a gain value that ramps smoothly from one level to another: a fade-in climbs from 0 (silence) up to full volume, and a fade-out falls from full volume back down to 0. That's all it touches. A fade changes level only — it never alters pitch or timing, so a faded clip is the same length and the same key as the original.
Because the ramp ends (or begins) at true silence, a fade also guarantees the very edge of your clip sits at zero. That detail is why fades and clicks are tangled together in the first place.

If the only issue is a snap at the edge, you don't want a fade at all — you want to top-and-tail the recording to a clean boundary. A click is a discontinuity: a non-zero sample at the edge forces an instant jump in level. Trimming the edit to a quiet point — ideally a zero crossing, where the waveform naturally passes through the zero line — removes that step. For curve, a linear fade (a straight line) is fine for short, technical de-click fades. Because we hear loudness roughly logarithmically, a long linear fade-out can sound like it drops too fast and then lingers; a logarithmic or S-curve fade tracks perceived loudness and sounds smoother over longer durations. A fade works on one clip going to or from silence. A crossfade overlaps the end of one clip with the start of the next, so one fades out while the other fades in and they blend seamlessly. How long should a fade in or fade out be? It depends on the feel. A de-click micro-fade only needs about 5–10 ms to remove a pop without being heard. A short musical fade is roughly half a second at each end, an intro fade-in is often under a second, and a musical fade-out commonly runs about 1–3 seconds — longer for a slow "drifting away" ending. There's no fixed rule; set it by ear.
