Ringtone Maker

Make a ringtone from a song you own: pick the best 30 seconds, add fades, and download M4R for iPhone or MP3 for Android. Free, no upload.

About the Ringtone Maker

The ringtone maker turns a song you already have into a ringtone file. Choose where the clip starts, set its length, and add a fade in and fade out so it doesn't begin or end abruptly — the preview plays exactly what the phone will. Then download it in the format your phone wants: M4R for iPhone, capped at 30 seconds, or MP3 for Android, up to 40.

MP3 is encoded on your device straight away. M4R uses our audio engine, a one-time download of about 20 MB to your browser that is cached afterwards; either way the song itself is never uploaded. Making the file is half the job — an iPhone still needs GarageBand or a computer to install a custom tone, while Android reads the MP3 directly. The step-by-step guides cover that part: ringtones for iPhone and ringtones for Android.

Frequently Asked Questions

What format does a ringtone need to be?

An iPhone uses M4R, which is AAC audio in an MP4 container with the extension iOS reserves for ringtones. Android phones accept ordinary MP3 files, along with OGG, WAV, and M4A. Pick your phone type and the ringtone maker exports the right one.

How long can a ringtone be?

Keep an iPhone ringtone to 30 seconds or less so iOS accepts the whole clip; the tool caps the iPhone setting there. Android has no fixed limit (the tool allows up to 40 seconds), but the phone only rings for a short time before voicemail picks up, so 20 to 30 seconds of the most recognizable part of the song is usually enough.

How do I get the ringtone onto my phone?

On Android, save the MP3 to the phone and choose it under Settings, Sound, Phone ringtone. On an iPhone, a file alone is not enough: you import the clip into Apple's free GarageBand app and export it as a ringtone from there, or sync the M4R from a computer. The song stays on your device throughout; the ringtone maker never uploads it.

Can I add a fade in and fade out to the ringtone?

Yes. Each fade can be set from 0 to 3 seconds in tenth-of-a-second steps, starting at 0.5 seconds in and 1.5 seconds out; on a very short clip each fade is limited to half its length. A short fade in stops the ringtone starting with a click, and a fade out keeps it from cutting off mid-note every time the phone repeats it. The preview plays the clip with its fades exactly as it will export.

What audio quality is the ringtone exported at?

Quality is fixed, so there's nothing to choose: the iPhone M4R (up to 30 seconds) is AAC at 256 kbps, and the Android MP3 (up to 40 seconds) is 192 kbps, both more than a phone speaker can reveal. The MP3 is encoded on your device straight away. The M4R is also made on your device, by Vocal Cut's audio engine, a one-time download of about 20 MB to your browser that is cached after the first use.
